The occupancy tax on hotels in the state of California isn't the sexiest of subjects.

It's hard to explain you've got a great deal for guests that wipes that the additional payment, even when there's a deal that makes sense as it shows you're on the side of the customer. Who wants to pay more in order that the government benefits?

So JDV Hotels has come up with an offer that wipes out the additional amount until April 15 at all of their 30 properties.

Plus they've come up with a natty new video to promote it, bringing in names such as Al Capone, Richard Pryor and Buster Keaton for extra heft, and amusement value.

Take a peek to see what they're going on about.

Glamour models join campaign against bed tax

It's great to see hoteliers joining in the "Say No To Bed Tax" campaign and with such taste and forethought as well. Hotelier Peter Grazier, co-owner of the Crown hotel in Harrogate, wheeled a bed outside the front of the Midland hotel in Manchester to highlight his opposition to a bed tax.

Of course Tony Blair probably had more pressing things on his mind - like what Gordon Brown might say during his conference speech and what his wife might say in response - but Peter's protest must have grabbed attention thanks to the scantily clad lingerie models who are also very much against the bed tax.... and why not!

Has the BHA woken up

Kitchen Rat was lucky enough to attend the BHA's annual lunch on Tuesday and was pleased to see the proceedings were dominated by the bed tax and the campaign to stop Sir Michael Lyons from recommending this revenue-raiser for local government. However, it must be said that the BHA's campaign slogan Put the Bed Tax to Sleep seemed wholly appropriate given that Travelodge and Caterer have both been running a Say No To Bed Tax campaign since April. One could say that at the BHA has finally woken up, but hey, I guess there's nothing like joining the party late in the day!

Dopey, Sleepy and H-y

A month after industry bible Caterer launched its campaign "Say No To Bed Tax", H magazine, from the people who bring you Restaurant (or R as its affectionately known in some quarters), has dragged itself kicking and screaming into the debate with, you've guessed it, a campaign all of its very own. Quite where they got the inspiration from is unknown, but dubbed "Put The Bed Tax To Sleep", one has to ask who's been doing the sleeping? Perhaps, H, you could think of a campaign a little dearer to your heart next time? How about "Bring Back Steps"?
