Nanny state - is it really necessary?

alcohol_ban.jpgSo the powers that be want the world to ban ads for alcohol in an attempt to combat the curse of binge-drinking and meanwhile Brussels wants food labels on everything from cans of fizzy drinks to cream to have a minimum 3 mm print size - meaning that some ingredient labels would be bigger than the actual product.

While you may feel this is bureaucracy going mad and at least half way down the slippery nanny state slope kitchen rat also noticed in the Metro news today the chap who had to go on a diet after his weight rocketed to 24 stone. He miraculously lost 8 and a half stone when he stopped drinking his favourite tipple Coke.

It turns out the man had been downing around 30 cans a day to fuel his habit - with common sense like this, perhaps we do need a nanny state.

It reminds us of the woman who, in the midst of the ITV telephone rigging scam, said she had called the phone lines hundreds of times and now felt like an idiot as she'd been duped - only now gov?

Three cheers for beer

neil morrissey.jpgMen Behaving Badly and Waterloo Road star Neil Morrissey is in the Metro this morning extolling the virtues of beer.

Having run a couple of private clubs and a hotel in Wales over the last few years, he's just launched his own beer at his new pub in North Yorkshire. A brave move you might think, in these testing times for the pub industry but we reckon it's about time this classic British tipple got a makeover like cider's epiphany with ice last summer.

His journey is documented on Channel 4 at 10pm tonight entitled Risky Business.

Painting the town Rouge

Rangers fans.jpgThe fall-out from Glasgow Rangers loss in the UEFA Cup final continues as stories emerge from operators about how they dealt with thousands of drunken Scots descending on Manchester.

By all accounts the pubs in the town centre had a quiet afternoon, as by lunchtime the fans of the Teddy Bears had drank the bars dry. An alternative source of booze had to be found so the canny Ger's hit the city's casual dining outlets in a rush for bottled beers.

It has emerged that Cafe Rouge Manchester gave up on selling French fare and emptied its cellars of booze by 3pm, forcing the restaurant to close, the staff to go home and the Rangers fans to turn to Tesco's for their drink.

The Scots being Scots though left a few bottles of the Moutard Rosé Champagne behind. It might have been their first UEFA Cup final appearance since winning the trophy in 1972 but there is no reason to spend that much money.
